There's a family of turtles that live on some rocks and a tree that sticks out of the water in a shallow bay by the M40 bridge.

There's a fight as to how far you have to live past the M40 bridge to really live 'on the lake' as opposed to 'on the river.'

It's totally man-made and it's gorgeous.

History of Lake Allegan

Lake Allegan is five minutes west of the city of Allegan and within a half hour of Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. It's less than two hours to Chicago, making it a popular getaway for people from all around the Midwest. The lake is an impressive 1,695 acres, only five acres smaller than the well known Lake Macatawa in Holland. It was formed by an impoundment of the Kalamazoo River at the Calkins Dam. With over 55,000 acres of state land just west of the lake forming the Allegan State Game Area, Lake Allegan hosts a wide variety of birds and wildlife, including bald eagles, osprey, egrets, great blue herons, mergansers, pileated woodpeckers, and many forest songbirds. It's a bird-watching paradise. The lake also is unique in that most of the lakefront lots have 100 feet or more of frontage, with several parcels in excess of one acre, giving it a beautiful up-north setting in a very convenient southwest Michigan location. A public DNR boat launch is available on the south side of the lake, just off Monroe Road.
