I live on Wildwood Drive and I am frustrated by the all too frequent power outages! It seems like every storm results in one. I have contacted Consumers Energy, and their reply was they didn't think they were too frequent (which I disagree with). Any community/Lake thoughts?
The frequency of our power outages is unacceptable. I have lived on Lake Allegan for 20 years. When I first moved here the power went out on a regular basis even on a calm sunny day. However about 12-15 years ago Consumers did complete some upgrades and it was better for awhile. Most of the people in my development have back up generators which tells you something. I am getting one installed in the Spring since we can not rely on Consumers Energy

We are from Fort Wayne Indiana. Hardly ever had a power outage. This is ridiculous how many power outages we have. its mostly because they don't want to spend the time or money to clear the trees that are on or near the power lines. Very frustrating.

It does seem like the power goes out every couple weeks. A lot of the power outlets in our house get the GFCI switch clicked off when the power goes out which is aggravating because the power doesn't come back to the switch until you "pop the button."
The email messages from Consumer's Energy saying the power is out is welcome as is the estimate as to when the power would be restored but still the number of outages is a lot more than we should have.
Ralph Stuba commented a year ago
This might be something to take to the Valley Township Board. I have contacted Consumers Power several times and get the same old story. The Valley Board should be able to request a representative to attend a board meeting and explain why they are still using poles and wires from the telegraph days. The next Valley Township Board will meet at the Township Hall at 7:30 on 12/14/2021. Please let me know if you want me to bring it up as I will attend the next meeting.

Yes, I think anyone living along the lake would appreciate any added pressure that can be placed on Consumers. It's clearly an issue and the frequency (despite Consumer's canned response) has increased over the past few years

Dave Thompson,
When you go to the Valley Township meeting - If it is possible to get information on the Consumers Power tree cutting process or plan (around power lines on Allegan Dam Road specifically), it would be helpful. I have requested tree cutting through the Consumers Power website, but received no response. If there is a better way to get trees cut away from the power line on our property, it would be helpful to know the best process.

Tim, We are trying to deal with the people at the top of Consumers Energy and not so much the Valley Township Board. The Valley Board already told us there is not much they can do to help. It just looks good going after Consumers Energy to have them included. Ron Remington did promise to do what they can to help.
Consumers Energy is creating a 10% most troubled area(s) for power outages. About the best we can do is to try to get Valley Township (Lake Allegan) on their list for 2022. Stupid as it appears Consumers Energy are going to concentrate on 10% of there customer base in Allegan County for clearing trees, new poles, heavier wires and upgrading circuits. It would seem this should be a priority for all of their customers. We are operating on the "Squeaky wheel gets the grease" approach at this point. What makes it hard is we have no choice, but to pay Consumers Energy for our power.
Your input and comments are much appreciated,

e-mail I sent to Consumer Energy... time for us to start becoming a pain in the rear to them
To: Leroy Wells, Jr.
I have resided at 4075 Wildwood Dr. Allegan since October of 2003. During the first few years the power would go out frequently for no apparent reason, even on a sunny day in the summer with little to no breeze. A few years after having to deal with the constant power outages we received a letter in the mail that Consumers Energy would upgrade the system in our area. After this work was completed we noticed a considerable improvement and the service had become fairly reliable.
Unfortunately, now our service has reverted to something less reliable than when I first moved here. This past year there have been a total of at least 5 power outages. One lasted over 5 days, we have also been out for over 24 hours and the other times we were out for several hours. Most everyone on the lake is on a well system, so when the power is out you are unable to even flush the toilets. On two occasions this year we have been forced to have our dog boarded and rent a hotel. I also have had to dump 2 refrigerator/freezers full of food out since they became unsafe to eat.
I have already purchased a stand by generator that will be installed in the Spring. The cost of this system is over 12k to be installed, but I feel like I have no choice because you are likely not to provide dependable service in this area that we are all paying you for. Your promises to improve the system around Lake Allegan are empty. Action is required by you!
I am operating under the assumption that my message will fall on deaf ears and you will send out a generic letter in response.

I just sent an email to LeeRoy Wells also asking Consumers Energy to be more transparent in explaining why the electrical power goes down every couple weeks. I told him that we have to resort to using our fireplace to heat our home and have to go down to the lake with a bucket to get water to flush our toilets. I also expressed fear that out water pipes will freeze and burst during the colder weather that is coming. I'm not sure what Consumers Energy is planning to do to improve service but they need to know their customers are dissatisfied.
Ralph Stuba commented a year ago
Tim, is right about the Valley Board not being able to do much as far as outside organizations (DNR, Consumers Energy) are involved. Lake Allegan Residents can get involved and help by sending emails to-
LeeRoy Wells (Senior VP of Operations) at consumersenergy@email.engagemsg.com
Megan Brown (Senior Director) at megan.brown@cmsenergy.com
Katie Carey (Director Media Relations) at katelyn.carey@cmsenergy.com
Brian Wheeler (Senior Director) at brian.wheeler@cmsenergy.com
Emails should express concern about the poor service and the need to make Valley Township a priority for improvements.
When we look at the 300 or so residents living within 2 miles of Lake Allegan we are talking about almost $800,000.00 dollars a year in
revenue to Consumers Energy. That should get attention from them!
Thanks

Mr Leeroy Wells
I am sure you heard quite a bit of complaints about power outages. Your stats really are pointless if we keep getting power outages. Whatever your doing, it's not enough, Because of so many outages.
Coming from Fort Wayne, it was very rare we had any outages. The first time we had a outage in Allegan, we drove around and noticed a lot of trees on the wires themselves. And a lot really close to them. Simple problem to fix is to clear the trees. The land the poles are on is consumers energy anyway. Someone has to okay the money to get these trees clear.
I think this is a big part of your problem. Getting really sick and tired of these outages. This area is no different than Fort Wayne. They solve there outages by clearing the trees far away from the wires. Ask the Governor for the funds to get these trees cleared if you have to. It's gone on far to long now.

I received a call from consumers grid engineering. he said the forester, Tonya, will be back in Allegan to review the lines. one note he shared is that they only have 15 feet on either side of the power lines for right of way. keep an eye out for Tonya and he mentioned they are also communicating with some of you. i recommended having a call with this Association so we can ask questions and get more information.
Kevin Kellow commented a year ago
Kevin,
Do you think the person is Tonya Berry? She just was promoted to VP of Productivity. She is located at One Energy Plaza, Jackson, Mich 49201. I can not find her email or phone. If this is the Tonya you are referring to she really is not a forester and she is very high up in the Consumers Company.
Consumers also have been telling me about the 15 foot limit and 50 foot tall trees.
If they can not find a solution (placing the wires underground, getting land owners to allow them to cut the trees back etc.) then we are pretty well stuck as the trees are going to keep coming down. If you get more information please get back here as we might want to try to get the concerned residents to a meeting?

David Thompson commented a year ago
Hi Dave,
Can you educate me on the 15 ft limit and 50 ft trees? What have you learned?
We recently bought a lot near our home and it has trees growing into the wires and we want to fix this situation.
There is a pole at the street and another pole deeper into the property so it would help to know what Consumers will cut and what we need to cut.
Thanks again for all you are doing in this power issue
Mary Zick commented a year ago
I just got off the phone with a guy from Consumers Energy. I was wrong about Tonya Berry. It is a forester named Tonya (you were/are right Kevin). Tonya is going to be in the area sometime soon. The CE guy is going to give my name, address and phone number to Tonya and she will contact me when she is going to be in Allegan. He told me she will meet with the residents. He told me about trees taking down wires and a lightening strike that hit in one storm. This might be a first step, but I am not counting on getting things fixed by meeting with Tonya. Most likely we will need to keep going to the top of the Consumers Energy people due to the amount of funding necessary to really fix the power grid. I will let you know by email if a meeting is possible. He seems to be calling everyone that complained.

David Thompson commented a year ago
Mary Zick,
Consumers Energy are required to get a "Right of Way" from all land owners before they can put in a power line. The right of way contains the poles and cross arms to hang the wires on. The claim after putting in the poles and wires there is only 15 feet on each side of the pole in their "right of way". They claim they are not able to trim or cut trees outside of their right of way. A lot of trees are just out side of their 15 foot right of way. They claim they are not able to cut trees on private land. Some trees are 50 feet high and they can drop limbs down on the wires or the entire tree can fall on the wires. I also have trees with limbs that if they fall will take out the wires. I have not been able to get any trees trimmed even though I am giving them permission to do so. The final solution is to bury the lines underground were they cannot get a good clean right of way.
I am trying to get the Forester to meet with the residents on this discussion in the near future. I hope this person can clear up some of the issues. However, due to the cost of really correcting the situation will take a great deal of funds and for that it has to go to the top of the Consumers Organization.
I will keep you posted on my end.
Thanks

If you filed a complaint on Consumers Energy with State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Public Service Commission web site you most likely got the same letter as I did yesterday. Governor Whitmer is on this committee!
The letter came to me from Lucy Clay, Regulation Officer. In the letter MPSC contacted Consumers Energy and they responded "The Lake Allegan area had 5 outages in 12 months due to trees". They did not bother to tell how long the outages were. Consumers again is placing their bet on the Forester to fix the trees.
Unless they are willing to cut down the state forest the trees will keep falling.
They should be working on a plan to bury the lines underground even if they only do one area a year. After the Forester gig I want to push that idea back up the chain.
Consumers also sent a letter telling 8 ways to survive their outages. They did also state that if an individual's power is out more than 16 hours they can file for a $25.00 service credit. I guess the credit is available if the power is not restored within 120 hours.
I am afraid Consumers excuses are like butts, "Everyone has one".

Dear Customer,
The summer of 2021 has been unusual and unpredictable in Michigan, as well as across the
country. Throughout the months of June, July, and August, areas across our state experienced
severe storms, torrential rains, flash flooding, high winds, and tornados that resulted in multiple,
and in some instances repeated, significant and sustained power outages across the state. A
series of storms across the Lower Peninsula from August 10 – 12 added to the extreme weather
this summer and resulted in more than 11,000 downed wires and approximately 1 million
customers without power.
Michigan utilities deployed thousands of personnel to restore power, including mutual assistance
crews from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Canada. We are grateful for the work of these utility
workers who at times worked 16-hour shifts, around the clock, and under difficult circumstances
to restore power to customers. However, some customers remained out of power for more than a
week and we recognize this created significant hardship.
Michigan’s utility customers expect reliable electric service from their electric utility and expect
that, when the power does go out, they will be restored in a timely fashion. As the events of this
summer made clear, more work needs to be done in order to meet those expectations.
Grid reliability is an issue of paramount importance to the Commission and we have taken many
steps over the last several years to improve reliability including:
• Initiating investigations into utility outages following the December 2013 ice storm and
March 2017 windstorm that resulted in more than 626,000 and 1.2 million outages
respectively. These investigations determined that better vegetation management would
improve reliability. The findings led to improvements in tree trimming specifications and
programs to remove dead trees from outside the right of way, both of which reduce the
likelihood of outages caused by falling trees or tree limbs.
• Approving a tree trimming surge, proposed by DTE Electric in 2018, which will allow
the company to address its tree trimming backlog and put the system on a five-year
trimming cycle by 2025. Consumers Energy has also proposed a tree trimming surge to
move to a seven-year trimming cycle by 2025.
• Directing Consumers Energy, DTE Electric, and I&M to file five-year distribution plans
which provide insight into the utilities’ long term distribution system planning, including
proposed infrastructure upgrades and vegetation management plans.
• Directing Consumers Energy and DTE Electric to include metrics in their distribution
plans related to system performance and related proposed investments.
• Initiating reviews and updates to several rule sets related to our service quality and
technical standards that will improve system reliability performance.
We know that these steps have made an impact. For instance, recent reports filed by DTE show
circuits that have been through the tree trimming surge program mentioned above experience
75% fewer tree-caused outages, compared to circuits that have not yet been trimmed as part of
this program. Additionally, when outages do occur on these trimmed circuits, the outages are
60% shorter in duration than the average outage on the circuits that have not yet been trimmed
under this program.
While past Commission actions have resulted in improved reliability, we realize that more work
needs to be done quickly. On August 25, the Commission issued an order opening Docket No.
U-21122 to investigate the utilities’ storm response to the Aug. 10 – 12 storms and requires
utilities to file additional information and data that will help improve the public and the
Commission’s awareness of utility plans, progress, and system performance.
In its order, the Commission directs the utilities to file a report which includes information
related to:
• Vegetation management and grid hardening and how these efforts are contributing to
reliability performance;
• Worst performing circuits, including the circuit name and the zip codes and communities
served by these circuits;
• Zip codes with the most and least frequent outages and the longest and shortest
restoration times;
• Bill credits plan for customers and a summary of restoration efforts; and
• Cost/benefit related to moving segments of existing overhead electric lines underground,
an analysis of the maintenance difference between overhead and underground lines, and a
comparison of reliability and safety performance between the two.
The Commission also announced in the order that it will host a technical conference on
October 22, 2021, to discuss Emergency Preparedness, Distribution Reliability, and Storm
Response. The Commission is also seeking stakeholder feedback on a number of issues related
to the utilities’ 5-year distribution plans and feedback on the current utility planning processes.
Additional information regarding the Commission’s order and requested stakeholder feedback
can be found here.
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to the Michigan Public Service Commission. With
recent outages and system performance of significant concern for many customers, we are
committed to doing our part to improve reliability for Michigan consumers.

On February 28th, we engaged with Consumers Energy on a ZOOM conference to get much better electrical service from them. On the conference from Consumers were- Derek Notz (Manager), Gregory Schultz (Senior Engineer), Mike Turiony (Senior Circuit Engineer) and Tonya Tuntevski (Forrester). The conference went about 1 hour with a number of questions being covered. It was established that there were 8 power outages in 2021 with one lasting over 2 days. Derek noted that all the outages were caused by trees except one where a car accident took out a power pole. It was expressed that this is not acceptable for the residents and the average should be no more than 1 a year.
What I heard from Consumers-
Consumers explained the electrical circuit making a loop around Lake Allegan. The main source of power is feeding in from Mill Grove.
Consumers Engineers are working on the Sub-Station to section off the circuits to isolate outages to small areas that will not take down the entire circuit.
Tonya explained the definition of "Consumers Right-of-Way" and what that means as far as clearing trees.
Tonya indicated she will start clearing trees/limbs in 30 to 60 days, mostly on the south side of Lake Allegan.
Derek stated problems can be addressed by calling Consumers at 800-477-5050. If I missed points or have incorrect information please make the correction. Thanks Dave Thompson David Thompson commented a year ago Thank you Dave Tim Miller commented a year ago Thanks again to Dave for all of his efforts on this subject! I attended, and attached a few images of the outages, and their location (from the meeting). Consumers reported that the South side of the lake experienced 3 more outages than the North (attributed to the heavily forested area). My impression was that Consumers did acknowledge the service was more unreliable, and unacceptable than usual in 2021, and as Dave mentioned they are planning to clear trees to improve it. In 2015 they did a "full circuit trim" of trees along the line, which is a major undertaking, but obviously resulted in service improvement. We asked if this was possible again, but they indicated it was not, due to expense, and that it might not necessarily be needed (based on 1 bad year). I am hoping we see improvement. Bob Cudone 4091 Wildwood Drive Bob Cudone commented a year ago Great update Dave and thank you for pushing for this meeting to happen. I will add that Tonya (the Forrester) asked that if a resident calls the 800 number about a tree situation, please leave as much information as possible - such as your name, phone number, the address where the tree situation is occurring, what the tree situation is - if the tree or branch is on a wire, if it is an urgent situation, etc. This helps her team assess next steps more quickly. Mary Zick commented a year ago Mary, I forgot to note that the Forrester will send out a post card to residents where she plans to work on trees. I think that is what she said. Also, you requested a summary of the meeting that can be posted here. Thanks Dave David Thompson commented a year ago I agree the power outages are ridiculous. I had started a thread for this documenting the dates here as Consumers was denying it, but cannot find it now. We have had 11 in the past year and 14 before that. We moved here fall September 2019, so to date we are at 25 in 3 years. Now with talk of removing our hydroelectric dam I grow more worried. Maintaining clean energy and our lake that the entire Allegan community enjoys should be an easy decision for Consumers. Janet Burgoyne commented 5 months ago I just checked the top 5 states that have the most power outages and we came in at number 5, which close to the worst. So the power outages are frequent. I keep saying it's because they haven't taken the time to trim the trees around the power lines. Rick Randall Rick Randall commented 4 months ago
